Titus J. Cartwright

photo.jpg

Titus Cartwright, born in Los Angeles, California, 1995 An African American artist, Titus, traveled from state to state as a child due to the instability of his biological parents. He suffered poverty, homelessness, and physical abuse by the individuals he most trusted but also experienced life in large cities, small towns, and rural America. These early influences are found throughout his work. His earliest works were pencil sketches which helped him distract from those abuses. After being removed from his parents’ care, he added painting to his repertoire and began to use vivid color as his voice when he felt that he had none. Graduating from Valencia College with Honors in 2016, the artist continues to draw from his past, but he now often incorporates themes of optimism gained from his adopted family with whom he now lives in Georgia. Other mediums of choice include sculpture, oil painting, pastels, and print making.  Themes of work include art for arts’ sake, appropriation art, and works relating to struggle and triumph over life and the human condition.
